A terrific field of 100 players today at a frosty and chilly Banchory Golf Club. Much appreciation to Professional Dean Vannet and all of the Greens staff at Banchory for allowing play to commence only 15 minutes behind schedule. Fingers were poised on the Alliance Group text to advise that the fixture was to be cancelled but a very pragmatic approach by the Banchory team meant that the full field enjoyed a beautiful day on a course in excellent condition. Many positive comments received from Alliance members on the course, the excellent catering and the welcome afforded by Banchory GC in general. Perhaps a slightly earlier date in next year’s calendar might reduce stress levels for hon secy!
Cruden Bay’s Kevin Duncan won his second event of the season with an excellent 5 under par 64. Six birdies and one solitary bogey at the par 3 second hole suggested that Kevin’s iron play was again in good shape. Fellow Cruden Bay member plus one handicapper Chris Gilbert had an equally tight round with five birdies and a solitary bogey five at the 17th. A very solid performance and so close to tying with Kevin in what must have been an interesting tussle as they played in the same group today.
After a few re-runs to determine whether amateur players would be better off winning a scratch prize or a handicap prize, Graham Somers of the Bon-Accord Club came out top with an excellent par round of 69, net 66 after deducting his three handicap allowance. Newmachar’s Lee Buck, also with a great par round of 69 fared financially better with a handicap score of 67 where 4th handicap place prize was higher than a fifth share of a 4th scratch prize. Strange but true.
Peterculter’s Jim Scott scored net 66 last week at his home club. So home advantage, surely. His 76 net 65 today suggests that home advantage may have been a red herring and that his natural talent (a former scratch golfer when he were a lad) is shining through. Jim Cobban of Portlethen may be wondering what he needs to do to top the prize list following an exceptional net 66 which “only” managed second place in the Class 2 handicap section.
