“Brutal” was the term most players used in describing today’s event at Fraserburgh.  While predicted gusts of 80 mph did not materialise, very strong south west breezes blew across the course from start to finish with little or no abatement.  While this was a stand alone fixture in its own right, it was also round one of the Alliance Championship which completes with round two next week at Portlethen which is also a stand alone event.  Combined scores from the two rounds will determine winners of the five championship trophies on offer so very few gave in to the battering that nature chose to deliver today.  Well done to all 95 players for their perseverance.

Greig Hutcheon won his sixth event of the season with an excellent par 70, just pipping local man Kris Nicol by one.  The tipping point was right at the death with Kris bogeying the par 3 17th to Greig’s par.  If only Kris could have emulated another member of the Hutcheon clan, Stephen from Cruden Bay, who aced the 17th into the teeth of the gale with a very well struck iron.  Despite all of the rounds played over the years by Alliance members, a hole in one has proved most elusive so well done to Stephen in such testing conditions.

Five handicapper Stuart McWilliam produced an excellent gross 72 which received much praise from playing partners.  While his net 67 was the best of the day, his gross score was good enough for third place in the scratch section.  As a result of that, Colin Duffus was the winner of the Class 1 handicap prize with a 70 (77 less 7) and the Cassie brothers took first and second places in the Class 2 handicap section with David producing a four shot margin 69 against Charlie’s 73.  So it is possible to complete a round in three hours and score well!
