What a sensational start to the second half of the 2019/20 Alliance season.  With gale force winds preventing any form of golf at Inverallochy on the previous day, 76 players enjoyed a cloudless blue sky on Wednesday 8 January 2020.  Gales reduced to a stiff breeze that made reasonable golf possible albeit with a high chill factor.

Regular Alliance winner John Duff must have been quite pleased with his early par 64.  However fireworks arrived later in the day with Peterhead’s Phil McLean recording a fine 3 under par 61 only to be outdone by his playing partner, Cruden Bay playing professional Kevin Duncan who improved by one shot from his winning score last year with our first 59 of the season.  Unlikely that anyone could better such a score in tricky conditions, surely.  Torphins Greig Hutcheon clearly had not read the script, however, as he handed over his card to the Scoring Team – out in 4 under par 29 and back in 3 under par 28.  A terrific 57 – 7 under par on the day – and winner by two shots.  Greig’s third win of the season already following success at Montrose and Newburgh.
