The Alliance made a first visit for many years to the King’s Links course in Aberdeen.  Indeed most of the 83 players confessed to either never having played the course or not having played it since 19??  With much of the UK suffering a good battering from Storm Ciara, Aberdeen yet again found itself as an oasis in the chaos.  Strongish cross winds, a “feels like” temperature of zero and the course stretched to its full length of 6,442 yards, everyone’s golf and survival skills were undoubtedly put to the test.  Being provided with the chance of playing golf at all in the meteorological circumstances was surely a plus but a few bedraggled looking members at the end of their round may beg to differ.

However Cruden Bay amateur Michael Buchan produced an excellent round of two under par 69 in halves of 36 and 33, matched only by regular winner, Torphins professional Greig Hutcheon who came home amongst the later starters with nines of 35 and 34.  Looking at their respective cards, hole 17 was critical with Greig producing a bogey 5 to Michael’s birdie 3.

In Class 1 Handicap section, Graham Meade’s net 68 playing off 4 won the day.  Graham could have been a scratch prize winner but his higher value net prize took precedence.  A closing burst of birdies at the last 3 holes made the difference with playing partners claiming putts of more than 40 feet at each hole were recorded.  No actual evidence provided, however.

Newmachar’s Ally Sorley topped the list in the Class 2 Handicap section with a 70 – 85 less 15.  Ally was held up on his way back from Edinburgh thanks to that big new bridge over the Forth being iced up and closed.  A sympathetic Hon Secy allowed a later rescheduled time and Ally brushed off any travelling stress with a one under par net score.
