Despite a number of call offs today, 92 players enjoyed an unusually calm outing at the Montrose Links.  Conditions were on the chilly side with cold, light rain appearing from mid afternoon.  Despite frost in some parts of the north east, players enjoyed the benefit of normal greens at Montrose and comments about the condition of the course were very positive.

It looked as if earlier starters would benefit from marginally more benign weather with Kris Nicol returning a level par 68 from a 9:06 tee time.  This looked to be heading for the top prize until penultimate pairing of Kevin Duncan (67) and Phil McLean with an excellent 3 under par 65 appeared from the gloom to secure second and first prizes respectively.

In the Class 1 Handicap section, Caledonian’s Richie Davidson started 3,3,3.  From the 10th, he again started 3,3,3.  The remaining 12 holes were “a mixed bag” but fortunately Richie did manage a place on the prize list.

Probably scratching his head this evening will be Raymond Brown of Deeside GC playing in the Class 2 Handicap section.  An excellent net 66 would surely be good enough to gain a place on the podium?  Not today as our five prizewinners, also with net 66, pushed Raymond into sixth place on a count back basis.  Strange but true.

All in all, a great day out as usual at a very welcoming Montrose Links.
