Newburgh 13 November 2019
Two in a row for one of our Alliance Members who just managed to meet the deadline to join for the 2019/20 season before the list closed. Torphin’s Greig Hutcheon seemed mildly surprised when he handed in his 9 under par 63 scorecard which included 3 birdies and an eagle 3 at the tricky par 5 ninth to reach the turn in 31. Four straightforward birdies in the second nine holes secured his nine under par 63. Most of our amateur Members simply looked on in awe at such an achievement.
With the planned visit to Oldmeldrum washed out by recent heavy rains, we were delighted to learn that Newburgh Golf Club were willing to stand in with less than 24 hours notice. Thanks must go in particular to the Senior stalwarts at the Club who agreed to delay their normal Wednesday event to accommodate the Alliance. Despite a persistent frost at the start of the day, play was delayed by only 30 minutes with all 83 members completing their round although a few late starters appeared somewhat dazed on their return to the Clubhouse.
However, Greig was pushed to the finish line by his Professional colleagues with Chris Robb of Meldrum House scoring an excellent 6 under 66 including back to back twos at 15 and 16. The crucial hole? Par 5 ninth, Greig eagle 3, Chris bogey 6. That’s ignoring all the other what ifs!
Kemnay’s Derek Craigie, despite an Alliance handicap cut from 6 to 5 last week, still managed to lead the Class 1 Handicap section with an excellent net 68. Jim Cobban from Portlethen popped up again to win the Class 2 Handicap section with a commendable net 69 on a day when amateurs clearly found the conditions challenging. Last year’s Order of Merit runaway Ally Sorley regained some form with a second placed net 70.
