Another fabulous Alliance Wednesday today at Peterhead Golf Club.  Sunny, chilly but dry and variable breezes virtually disappearing by the end of the day.  The course in very good condition for the first week in February with full greens in play and a good course length for the time of year.

Kris Nicol went out just after 9 am and probably faced the strongest breezes of the day but was undeterred, producing halves of 32 and 31.  A seven under par round of 63 with 11 pars and 7 birdies.  Kris’ score led by seven shots for most of the day until Ladies European Tour player Laura Murray made some inroads with a one under par 69, later equalled by local amateur favourite Drew Buchan coming in at the end of the day.

However, the fireworks were only just beginning with this season’s multi-winner Greig Hutcheon producing another solid round of four under 66, shortly to be overtaken by local pro and last week’s winner Phil McLean with a 34-31 five under par 65.  The Alliance Communications Team were set to release the results, very unwisely as it turned out as two times winner so far this season Kevin Duncan from Cruden Bay burst through the finishing tape with a somewhat hard to imagine 10 under par 60.  In perfect symmetry, Kevin produced halves of 30-30 including nine birdies, an eagle at the par 5 eighth hole and a solitary bogey at the 9th.  Not too shabby.

With winning places dependent on prize value both Willie Middler (68) and John Borthwick (67) would have been in the Scratch prizes list had it not been for higher value winnings as first and second placed in the Class 1 Handicap section.  Excellent scoring from both and allowing Drew and Laura to feature as Scratch prize winners!

Richard Stephen’s Newmachar 14 handicap has been slashed to 13 from next week thanks to his third prize in 5 weeks.  After last week’s sextuple log jam, Richard won by one shot from Barry Elsby who had a commendable 76 less 9 considering his less than regular playing routine.
